MUSIC REVIEW: Doncaster Youth Swing Orchestra at Tickhill Music Society

Doncaster Youth Swing Orchestra

Review by Philip James

Doncaster Youth Swing Orchestra got Tickhill Music Society’s new season off to a swinging start on Friday, 17th September, in St Mary’s church.

After 18 months of being deprived of live music, it was a real treat to hear these talented local youngsters being taken through their paces by musical director Mark Sabin.

They celebrated the Music of the Masters through such classics as Take the A Train and American Patrol, with numerous deft solos.

Particularly poignant was the lesser-known Through the Looking Glass.

For such young players, some of their improvisations in B is for Blues were brave and imaginative.

Nerves hardly seemed to play a part since the players were as content to be back playing live as the rapt audience were to be back listening.

And what a good audience turned out! Our fears of poor attendance proved entirely false: the first night out in many months for many of our members but, of course, a continuation of support from the parents of the band.

To think that their rehearsals had been largely by Zoom, this was an impressive recital.

On October 29th, our next concert featuring the pianist Antonina Suhanova will be FREE! Be in St Mary’s school hall in Tickhill for 7pm and be in for another real treat.
