DETERMINED MUM PUTS UP A FIGHT FOR SON

A determined mum whose little boy was fighting for his life at just three weeks old is pulling on her boxing gloves in an attempt to raise money for a children’s charity that enabled her to be just minutes away from her son in his time of need.

Claire Rowe, 28 from Stoke-on-Trent, is taking to the ring in a charity White Collar Boxing match on 15th March to help raise funds for The Sick Children’s Trust – a charity which aims to keep families together in the most crucial of times.

At just three weeks old, Claire’s son Kayne was admitted to Sheffield Children’s Hospital 80 miles away from his home for a stomach condition – Pyloric Stenosis – which left the new born seriously dehydrated and unable to gain weight.

The Sick Children’s Trust offered not only Claire, but also her eldest son Amir accommodation in their Magnolia House, Sheffield, while they waited for Kayne to have a lifesaving operation in the Neonatal Surgical Unit. Magnolia House has direct access to the ward, which meant Claire could be with Kayne throughout his recovery. Claire says:

“It was a very worrying and stressful time and for Kayne to be going through this at such a young age was heart-breaking. Not only that, it was affecting the rest of my family. My eldest son, Amir, was also taken ill due to the stress and The Sick Children’s Trust invited him to come and stay at Magnolia House too so we could be together as a family.

“To know that I was just minutes away from where Kayne was being treated was a huge relief. I couldn’t have physically been there for him if it wasn’t for the accommodation provided by The Sick Children’s Trust.”

Claire, a self-confessed exercise beginner, has already smashed her target of raising £200 and is looking forward to getting in the ring and raising more cash for the charity.

“I want to give back and say thanks to The Sick Children’s Trust and the staff at Magnolia House for making what was such an awful time, manageable. This is something that I have never done before, I’ve never stepped foot in a gym before, so stepping foot in the boxing ring is really going outside my comfort zone – but it should be fun!”

If you would like to support Claire, tickets are available for the event at Victoria Hall, Stoke, for just £20*. Alternatively you can pledge a donation by visiting https://www.justgiving.com/Claire-Rowe3/

*All proceeds from the tickets will go to Donna Louise Children’s Hospice which provides care and support to families of children with life limiting conditions in the Staffordshire area.
