Travel agent expects surge in enquires as Blue Monday shoppers look to escape to the sun
Sun-loving South Yorkshire folk are defying the despair of the most depressing day of the year by booking a 2015 summer escape, a Meadowhall travel agent has revealed.
This Monday, 20 January, is known as Blue Monday, a day in which a record number of people are most likely to feel glum about the year ahead and experience a bout of the post-party season blues.
Returning to work after the Christmas break, short days, cold wintery weather and a lack of sunlight are also a major factor as the reality of a New Year hits and many desperately seek a change of scenery and a relaxing retreat.
But according to one luxury travel company, which operates a store in Meadowhall Shopping Centre, the people of South Yorkshire have a ready remedy for the Blue Monday melancholy – booking an exciting trip abroad.
Kuoni, who specialise in worldwide tailor-made holidays, says it has experienced a spike in bookings in January and is expecting a further uplift as Blue Monday approaches and people plan an escape.
Store Manager at Kuoni Meadowhall, Andrew Fielding, said: “The prospect of being back at work following a long Christmas break and not knowing when the next retreat will be can be a daunting feeling –holidays give people something to look forward to in the year ahead..
“We’ve had a brilliant start to the New Year and the momentum is definitely building throughout January. We have had a rise in customers making appointments, which gives them an allotted time slot with one of our experts and we would encourage people to do this during our peak period, especially if it’s for a special occasion such as a honeymoon.”
The desire for a glimpse of the sunshine is driving many eager holiday-makers to take their tropical trip early this year, with more than ever opting to fly off in the Spring rather than waiting for the Summer.
Those who are still choosing to holiday in the summer, are also booking their break earlier to give themselves something to look forward to during the cold winter months.
Sunshine is top of the priority list for Meadowhall shoppers fed up with the harsh wintery weather, with relaxing island destinations amongst best-sellers.
Andrew added: “Our sale, which is centred around the theme, ‘Find Your Amazing’ kicked off on Boxing day and this has had a massive impact on bookings with destinations such as Maldives, Mauritius and the Caribbean proving particularly popular. We have also seen a huge surge in holidays to America.
We expect another busy weekend coming up and our personal travel experts will be on-hand to discuss holiday plans with the shoppers of Meadowhall.”
Meadowhall, Yorkshire’s Premier Shopping Centre, hosts a range of retailers and food outlets across the Centre including Jo Malone of London concession in House of Fraser, Reiss, The North Face, Caffe Rizzoli, wagamamas and Yo! Sushi.
