Meadowhall Shopping Centre has achieved the first ever Disabled Parking Award in Yorkshire, due to excellent parking facilities at the centre.

Last week, Disabled Motoring UK awarded the Yorkshire Shopping Centre the prestigious award, which aims to improve disabled parking facilities and reduce the abuse of disabled parking,  after Meadowhall met the full specified criteria including maintaining accessible bays, having clear signage, spaces which are easily accessed, good car park light and easy entry to the car park.

Other criteria fulfilments for the award consisted of payment, which did not apply to Meadowhall due to its free parking policy.

Not only is Meadowhall the first to achieve this award in the region, but is only the third Shopping Centre in the country to receive the accolade.

Darren Pearce, Meadowhall Centre Director, said: “We pride ourselves on helping make the customer’s journey as easy as possible. The Centre provides 350 disabled parking spaces to our customers which are easy to access and which are close to the Shopmobility available in-centre.

“It was fantastic news when we heard we had been awarded the Disabled Parking Award. It highlights our commitment to making the customer experience as good as possible.”

In addition, the award also recognises that Meadowhall considers enforcement around the disabled by to be of high importance within their parking policy.

Helen Dolphin Director of Policy and Campaigns for the charity Disabled Motoring UK said: “It gives me great pleasure, to commend Meadowhall Shopping Centre on this achievement and I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all personnel involved.

“When you have a disability it can be a struggle finding a car park that meets your needs and so it is fantastic to know that users of these facilities can be confident that they will be able to park. DMUK has a lot of complaints about the abuse of the Blue badge scheme and we hope the DPA will ensure that car park operators are recognised for their efforts in tackling the issue.”

Meadowhall overall has 12,000 free parking spaces, covers 1.5 million sq. ft. of floor space and has over 280 stores in-centre that attracts over 25 million visitors per year.
